Scenic designer Kelly Tighe’s easily adaptable set consists of three Erector-set-type structures that can be rolled, turned and attached to one another very quickly. The largest structure becomes the main stage and is used for many scenes: Sometimes the action is in front of the curtain, sometimes it’s backstage. The “curtains” themselves are terrific: One is all silver tinsel; another flutters down from above, and another time the curtain becomes solid. Margaret Toomey’s costumes are certainly a highlight here: So many sparkle and shimmer from the first scene — screaming-red sequin dresses worn by a trio of singers, shirred, long, white gowns with a black flounce, and just about every other outfit.
On the Spark playground recently, 500 elementary students were rocking out to Katy Perry, “I am a champion, hear me roar, oh oh ohhhh,” screamed the classes lined up on the asphalt, After Principal Jaclyn O’Brien shouted, “Who’s ready for the NWEA,” a revved-up chorus replied, “We’re ready!”, NWEA — Northwest Evaluation Association — is one of several standardized tests Rocketeers take annually, Days at Rocketship schools start and sometimes end with such pep rallies, which illustrate the promise — and some peacock glitter ballet flats say perils — of the charter organization’s focus: bulking up children’s testing prowess..

Some of us will find the motive the Thousand Oaks shooter offered for his actions difficult to process. Small wonder. This is nihilism too monstrous to be believed. This is anti-life. Meaning not just the biological processes that cease when a bullet tears through heart and mind, but also all the tiny joys, the little pleasures, the small and not-so-small rituals, that give those processes meaning. The nihilist holds that nothing means anything. That’s why he — almost always “he” — can gaze upon people in a bar, at the movies, going to class, enjoying a concert, worshipping God and see only targets.
