The honor, announced Tuesday, is presented annually by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to institutions with innovative approaches to providing community service, becoming a valuable resource for families and individuals. The Tech is the only West Coast museum to receive the medal this year, joining the Los Angeles Public Library as the only California honorees. Tim Ritchie, the Tech’s president and CEO, says it’s part of the Tech’s mission to use its resources to build a better community, inspiring visitors — but especially young people — to reach for success in today’s technology-driven age. Some of this happens at free Family Math & Engineering events each month, and it really shows at the annual Tech Challenge, where teams of students will compete this weekend to build structures that can withstand the effects of a massive quake.

Under the direction of conductor Marin Alsop, Cabrillo has become one of the preeminent forums for new music on the West Coast. This season features numerous premieres, including Hannah Lash’s “Eating Flowers,” which was commissioned by the festival and gets its world premiere as part of the Aug. 15 Santa Cruz Civic concert titled “Wish You Were Here.” Every other piece on the program is a West Coast premiere, including Sean Shepherd’s percussion-laden “Blue Blazes” and Nico Muhly’s gamelan-inspired “Wish You Were Here.”.
