Peabody also directs a solid cast through the many twists and turns of Christopher Marlowe’s work. Originally set in the 1300s, the story of the Edward II monarchy has been moved to the 1920s. According to Peabody, he chose this period because it was also a time of conflict set between two world wars when the women’s suffrage movement and the rise of fascism were both taking place and homosexuals were being persecuted. The period certainly gave costume designer Liz Martin a chance to shine, with stunning gowns, pinstriped suits and even a period pilot’s uniform.
